Coiling Kayfun
« on: February 09, 2014, 11:57:27 AM »
Many people struggle with the Kayfun, I did for long time.
Finally, I found a way of coiling it that works for me. I've been setting it up this way for a month and it works flawlessly.
Hence this thread is for anyone who can't get a good vape out of this atty. Or anyone who wants to try this way.

It is really a combination of different methods and advices I've been given.
Nothing fancy, just a straight forward coil.

I use 3mm silica and 0.25 kanthal, 3/4 wrap

I attach the coil from the top, this way, you will not get 'hot legs'.
I make sure that the wire is not too far from the wick when attaching it, NOT like in the picture below

I make sure it looks more like this

I cut the silica just to touch the base. Start with a longer piece, bend it down, see how it is, cut a bit more and repeat until it's touching the base

I don't attach the coil diagonally, less bending, easier flow

The chimney goes straight over it. I help the silica with a small screwdriver so it doesn't get into the threads

I use needle nose tweezers and lift up the coil a little, make sure it's not touching the screws.
Most importantly, I part the silica strands and and make sure the channels are free

Test fire

And that's it!
No dry hits, no leaking, good flavour, plenty of vapour - the way it should be  :)+1

 Nice tutorial Stan.
Thatís more or less the way I coil the Kayfun (after a lot of playing around)
Works for me, short wicks only just touching the deck, no folding along the deck.

:]++ Nice tutorial. Excellent, clear pictures as well!  Good job.

What resistance did this build get you?

Also, as a more general question: any advantages to two strands of wick over a single strand?

I don't usually check the resistance, I try different set ups and then stick with what I like. I'm guessing around 1.2 ohms? I couldn't tell you. I have two multimeters and they are both all over the place when I try to measure the internal resistance so I gave up on them.

I've not tried one strand. I'd say two will be better because it will hold more juice.

This just may be the answer to the problems I encounter coiling for my KayFun's.  Tomorrow's project unless I get overwhelmed by the "Honey-do" List.   :D

No, don't use non resistant wire, otherwise it's not going to work

You need resistance wire such as Kanthal or Nichrome

Is there a reason why you don't use microcoils?

Micro coils are good for cotton, not so for Silica/Bastos

Industrious rascals, aren't they? I just read, in a Terry Pratchett book, (rough paraphrase) that if criminals would put as much effort into honest work as they do into crime, they could probably make a lot more money.

we've had quite a few spammer types lately,  they dont really remain up usually for more than a few seconds or on a bad day  a few minutes.   there's usually one of us around or a reported post.    i've seen some forum spam that remains up for days  %5%
