Sony US18650VTC4
« on: December 02, 2013, 12:02:54 PM »
One of the Denmates here pointed out the new Sony US18650VTC4 battery to me.  It's a pretty amazing cell, same as the Sony US18650VTC3, but with 2100mAh (nominal) over the 1600mAh of the US18650VTC3.  I managed to find a data sheet for the cell and posted it in my personal web space.  Here it is.

Is this a protected cell? Can you use it in a mechanical mod ?

It's an unprotected IMR cell so yes, you can use it in a mech.  Though, the main advantage of this cell is the massive 30A drain limit.  It's only a considerable benefit for very low resistance atomizers.  For atomizers above an Ohm, you can use cells with higher capacity (more run time) which results in a lower drain limit.  The big drain limits are not required for an atomizer with a more standard resistance.

Thanks Craig , I don't use low resistance atties, so I will stick to my efest imr 18650's.

I have some of the 1600 mAh batteries and love em.  I'll have to look for some of these as well.  Would be nice to have a little more run time.  It's surprising how fast you can drain one with a .5 ohm atty.

Yes, it goes fast.  This one knocked the Samsung INR18650-20R off the top of the heap.  It's the new one to beat.  Thanks to Seanvapes for bringing this one to my attention.  I usually catch the new models as they come out, but sometimes I miss a release.  The INR18650-20R is 22A and 2000mAh.  The US18650VTC4 is 30A and 2100mAh, pretty big jump.  FYI, cells like this are specifically designed for power tool packs, but they happen to be perfect for high power vaping.

Portable power tools need outputs of a half to a full horsepower which is 375 to 750 Watts.  That's a drain of 20 to 40 Amps for a 19V battery pack.  It really pushes the envelope on battery drain limits.  Otherwise, we'd never see round cells with drain limits over 2C.

Flat LiPo cells have been delivering drain rates like that since they've been used for hobby applications which has been for some time.   However, they have low energy density compared to round cells.  For example a 20C lipo uses about 12 square mm per mAh.  The US18650VTC4 uses about 7 square mm per mAh and has a similar drain limit.
