PHE publishes independent expert e-cigarettes evidence review

PHE publishes independent expert e-cigarettes evidence review

The report covers e-cigarette use among young people and adults, public attitudes, the impact on quitting smoking, an update on risks to health and the role of nicotine. It also reviews heated tobacco products.
The main findings of PHEs evidence review are that:

vaping poses only a small fraction of the risks of smoking and switching completely from smoking to vaping conveys substantial health benefits
e-cigarettes could be contributing to at least 20,000 successful new quits per year and possibly many more
e-cigarette use is associated with improved quit success rates over the last year and an accelerated drop in smoking rates across the country
many thousands of smokers incorrectly believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking; around 40% of smokers have not even tried an e-cigarette
there is much public misunderstanding about nicotine (less than 10% of adults understand that most of the harms to health from smoking are not caused by nicotine)
the use of e-cigarettes in the UK has plateaued over the last few years at just under 3 million
the evidence does not support the concern that e-cigarettes are a route into smoking among young people (youth smoking rates in the UK continue to decline, regular use is rare and is almost entirely confined to those who have smoked)

PHEs evidence review comes just a few weeks after a US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine report on e-cigarettes. Their conclusion on e-cigarette safety also finds that based on the available evidence e-cigarettes are likely to be far less harmful than combustible tobacco cigarettes.

Professor John Newton, Director for Health Improvement at PHE said:

Every minute someone is admitted to hospital from smoking, with around 79,000 deaths a year in England alone.

Our new review reinforces the finding that vaping is a fraction of the risk of smoking, at least 95% less harmful, and of negligible risk to bystanders. Yet over half of smokers either falsely believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking or just dont know.

It would be tragic if thousands of smokers who could quit with the help of an e-cigarette are being put off due to false fears about their safety.

Think i'm gonna send this link to my parents,  i'm sure they think i'm deluded as they only print out bad vaping news for me and dont notice the positive  x}

Its always easier to give thing a bad name than a good one as its more sensational in the news.
If a random mobile phone, laptop or torch bursts into flames it hardly gets a mention but if it happens to an e-cig battery its a world wide sensation.
I haven't had a stinky in 9 years and some people still think I haven't quit because I vape, its like saying an alcoholic is still drinking because he has a lot of coffee  :D

it really annoys me when i'm told i'm still smoking,  also when peeps ask me  why havent i given up vaping yet,    erm  because i dont want to,  then i get,  what was the point of giving up smoking then  x}     i just cant be bothered to answer anymore  :D

That's a great review and about time too!  You definitely should send to your folks!  I should send it to my neighbours too!  I still hide everything when they are in my house!  They absolutely refuse to listen, and always take a step back if they are near me!

I gotta do something, if just chewing on a toothpick or stir stick . K

Darth Vaper:
My family leaves me alone, they understand the situation and the angles of Government/Big Tobacco/Big Pharma. I keep them informed and they know whats up. They have seen the ills of smoking kill off a good number of my family.

It gets on my nerves when co-workers dig there heels in when a new negative report comes out. A good majority of smokers switched to vaping at my last job, now the same is happening at my new job, so I'm starting to hear it all over again from the haters.

Most of them usually shut up when I explain to them the doctor who has seen my lung x-rays and done extensive blood work on me came up with nothing and my lungs are clearing at the same rate as someone who quit smoking completely.

I usually end the argument with 95% of what you read in the news is 100% pure bullshit. And the bullshit in particular they are spreading kills people, and that right there is a cold hard fact.

LOL one of em picked up vaping a week later.  :)+1
