rDNA40, repair slash mod
« on: June 09, 2017, 07:54:02 AM »
Got a bit of tinkering to do. Stock 510 is sticky and sometimes wont make contact even with atties that have longer connector like Lemo 2. Only option for the new 510 is obviously the famous FDV 510 v4 ultimate.

Yes its nekkid, rubber coating and paint were badly peeling so I hit it with a dremel and sanding disk. I'll sand it smooth later.

More photos coming later.

So, what's the plan for the body. Are you just going to leave it raw, paint it or get a wrap for it??

Don't know. Might leave it as it is, surface is surprisingly smooth and I can't feel those scratches.

Well, if you want to wrap it, Zap Wrapz should have one for it.

Ran into trouble.

That internal frame is held in place by a cover plate AND a piece of stupid strong double sided tape. I'll have to try some new tactics to get it out instead of going caveman with a screwdriver. Now lets see where I stashed that hair dryer, heat should do the trick.

There we go, a bit of heat did the trick. Got the whole unit out intact unlike some who have destroyed the wireless charger receiver by going apeman on it.

Project Pretty Princess: see that glossy piece between screw posts? That is a plastic "window" for the wireless charger function and I have a plan for it. Box is going to be sanded smooth, polished, clear coated and I'm going to have a wood panel made for it. Got a big piece of teak but curly birch is the better looking option, don't know how well that would hold up as its a lot softer than teak.

Priority is getting the 510 sorted out, surface job can wait.

Hole's done but not so dusted. There's a fair bit of metal flakes in the case but I'll clean them later. If you are wondering about that small cutout at 9 o'clock, FDV 510 v4 ultimate has an anti-spin tab which needs its own little hole.

Of course enlarging the 510 hole was not enough. Those protrusions need to go as the nut can't be tightened all the way.

Needs a bit of deburring and then its time for some soldering.

Of course there was something else that had to shed metal. That u shaped piece locks the stock 510 in place.

Edit: its gonna go completely, can't get the cover plate back on as that new connector takes a lot more room. Sharky does work btw.

Done!

Squeezing in a new 510 is literally a pain in the arse. Forget about long bodied 510s, you have JUST enough room to get a FDV v4 in there. And thats after grinding away relatively large amount of internal supports.

Would I do this again? Maybe.

Caz:

(I need to re-watch SG1)

Kate: didn't have to look for one, it presented itself in the form of a failing right button on my monstrous G700 mouse. G700 has a very common issue with primary button starting to double-click, failing to stay down when held or they just break completely. Luckily I had an identical but completely dead mouse stashed away for spare parts. Black boxes with grey bits on both sides of the wheel are the primary switches.

Pulled those from the dead rat and transplanted them to my mouse. Unopened G700 is $250+ on Amazon, G700s is $90+ and successor model G900 is 160+€ in my area so thats why. Did I mention that this mouse is a monster? Wireless but in a blind test you can't tell it is, thirteen buttons of which ten can be customized to do whatever you want, five profiles that are stored on the mouse itself and to top that off: its extremely accurate and responsive. Wired and "high-end" mice are crap compared to this.

[Edit]
As is normal for Logitech, screws keeping the housing together were hidden under the pads. Had to find a strong double-sided tape to get them back on. Otherwise they come loose in minutes.
[/Edit]

Oh and Pretty Princess is still nekkid, haven't had the time. I've been preparing myself for upcoming studies, starting electrician's training on august 10th and graduating june 1st next year. Already got a degree in information and communication technology but more can't hurt.

Electricians training sounds right up your alley beyonder!  Go for it!! :)

I've been using this wee iPad for everything these days!  I have all the computer goodies (scanner, microphone, high end speakers) and a "smart mouse", but I unhooked it all and I cancelled cable service, using wifi now!

To be honest I kinda miss it!  iPad keeps crashing!  :(  k

Doesn't just sound, it is. However...

There might be a change in the plans. A gigantic change that can be described with the words "international" and "move", someone from England called me and interviewed me for a job there.

My goodness beyonder, exciting!  How big of a move for you is it!  Your profile does not say where you're from!!  How did the interview go, were you offered job?  . K

I live in southern finland in a city called "Hämeenlinna", right in the city center. It would be a 1800-1900km move which is not even close to a minor change of location. As for if I'll get it, IMHO I aced it and they'll let me know later this week. My wallet pre-emptively screamed at the moving costs.

Got another call about half an hour ago from India of all places. Someone with stupidly thick indian accent (I had to lie about bad cellular reception and suggested emailing me) asked if I was interested in some other job, IT support or something in London. Still waiting for that email tho.

We'll see how this turns out.

my niece is moving to London at the end of this month,  she loves it there, a lot of her friends she met at university in Swansea now live there,  she's already got a great job lined up,   exciting times.

Maybe we should all move to London!!  Think I'd really like that too!

@beyonder, surely the company would cover some of the moving expenses if they really want your expertise!  How did you hear about this job?  :). K
